Idris Elba’s crime drama “Yardie” (a Jamaican slang term), which was premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, is set in Kingston and Hackney during 1970s and 1980s. The film stars Aml Ameen, Stephen Graham and Calvin Demba. “Yardie” is based on the British cult novel of the same name by Jamaican-born writer Victor Headley. Early this year, the first trailer of the film and a poster was released.“Yardie” a British gangster thriller revolves on the life of a young Jamaican man D (Aml Ameen), who has never fully recovered from the murder, committed during his childhood, of his older brother Jerry Dread (Everaldo Creary). When the young boy witnesses his brother’s assassination, a powerful Don gives him shelter. But 10 years later when he goes back to London his past catches up to him.The film has mixed reviews. The Guardian writes, “When you see stills from this film you will be bowled over by the costumes and overall swagger of the performers, particularly Sheldon Shepherd as King Fox. All the elements are here for a great film, but Elba rarely gets beyond the surface of the 1980s Jamaican immigrant community.” On the other hand, Variety writes, “With its bright, inviting visuals and well-knitted ensemble of actors — often doing more than the script strictly demands of them — ‘Yardie’ is a convincing enough calling card for Elba’s helming skills, already honed on a couple of teleplays and music videos; it’s not hard to see him steering a higher-budget genre piece in this vein.” Brock Norman Brock and Martin Stellman’s screenplay even gets thumbs up. Hollywood Reporter writes: “Idris Elba shows a decent grasp of the fundamentals of old-fashioned, novelistic storytelling. But for a movie that throbs with the reggae-inflected beats of a punchy soundtrack, “Yardie” is a rather listless gangland saga, lacking the muscularity that the genre demands.”Idris Elba is an English actor, producer, musician, and DJ. He played a drug trafficker in Stringer Bell on the HBO series “The Wire”; DCI John Luther on the BBC One series “Luther” and Nelson Mandela in the biographical film “Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom” (2013).  He has been nominated four times for a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor. Besides acting, Elba is also a DJ under the moniker DJ Big Driis (or Big Driis the Londoner), a hip-hop and soul musician. He was named in the Time 100 list of the Most Influential People in the World in 2016.The film opens on August 31, 2018, at Electric Cinema, London. 191 Portobello Road, London, United Kingdom. For details, visit:  https://www.electriccinema.co.ukClick on the slideshow for a sneak peek at the film.              www.blouinartinfo.comFounder: Louise Blouin
