“BlacKkKlansman” is a 2018 American biographical crime co-written and directed by Spike Lee. The film is based on the autobiographical book “Black Klansman” by Ron Stallworth. The film stars John David Washington, Adam Driver, Laura Harrier and Topher Grace. Set in 1970s Colorado, the plot follows an African-American detective who sets out to infiltrate and expose the Ku Klux Klan. The film premiered on May 14, 2018, at the Cannes Film Festival, where it competed for the Palme d’Or and won the Grand Prix. The film reportedly earned a 10-minute standing ovation. It is scheduled to release in the United States on August 10, 2018, which coincides with the one-year anniversary of the Charlottesville riots. In the early 1970s, Stallworth became the first black detective in Colorado Springs. “At the height of the civil rights struggle, racial riots broke out in the big cities of the United States. Ron Stallworth becomes the first Black American officer of the Colorado Springs Police Department, but his arrival is greeted with skepticism, even outright hostility, by the lower-ranking officers of the police station. Taking courage with both hands, Stallworth will try to move the lines and, perhaps, leave a trace in the story. He then set himself a mission of the most perilous: infiltrate the Ku Klux Klan to denounce abuses,” writes the Max Linder Panorama website. Stallworth and his partner did not make any arrests, but together they managed to thwart cross burnings and other Klan activities.IndieWire’s Eric Kohn called the film “electric” and Lee’s “most entertaining film since ‘Inside Man,’” while The Guardian’s film critic Peter Bradshaw compared it to a “pinball machine, pinging and flashing with N-bombs, blaxploitation tropes and unsubtle Trump premonitions.”“’BlacKkKlansman’ is both hilarious and exquisitely direct, and had it been made before November 2016, you might call Lee’s approach a little alarmist. But if anything, he’s restrained. This is an angry film as well as a hugely entertaining one, and Lee has complete control over its shifting tone, minute by minute,” says Time.Spike Lee is an American director, producer, writer and actor. Lee’s films explore race relations, the role of media in contemporary life, urban crime and poverty, and other political issues. His directorial debut film was “She’s Gotta Have It” (1986).
