“Mary Poppins Returns” is an upcoming American musical fantasy film directed by Rob Marshall and written by David Magee, from a story by Magee, Marshall, and John DeLuca. Based on the book series by P.L. Travers and a sequel film to 1964’s “Mary Poppins,” the film stars Emily Blunt as the main protagonist along with Lin-Manuel Miranda and Ben Whishaw. Dick Van Dyke is the only actor from the original to return. Set in 1930s London, 25 years after the events of the original film, it sees Poppins, the former nanny of Jane and Michael Banks, re-visiting them after a family tragedy. The shooting for the film took place at Shepperton Studios in Surrey, United Kingdom. The 1964 film had featured Julie Andrews in the lead. The new film is set in the Depression-era London. The trailer opens with a lone kite flying and a child and the lamplighter are seen pulling at a kite only to discover a figure shrouded in the dark descending from the sky. It is Mary Poppins of course, complete with a hat and all. The last shot briefly sees Emily Blunt’s mischievous nanny look in the mirror and her comment on how she feels great about meeting the Banks children. The teaser also plays the popular song, “A Spoonful of Sugar.” Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman have penned and composed original songs and an original score for the musical sequel.During a VIP screening of her new film “A Quiet Place,” Emily Blunt said: “I was very, very nervous but Rob Marshall is an incredible director and he is a wonderful friend as well. He made an incredible, emboldening atmosphere on set. I just wanted to make my own version of Mary, but ultimately if people like it or not I don’t know... but we will see.”“Mary Poppins,” the film based on the popular children’s book by author P.L. Travers, followed a magical flying British nanny as she improved the lives of the unhappy Banks family with the aid of chirpy Cockney chimney sweep Bert. “The sequel boasts a supporting cast including Lin-Manuel Miranda as Jack, a street lamplighter who could well be an updated version of Dick van Dyke’s “chim chimney” sweep from the 1964 original film, Meryl Streep as Poppins’ cousin Topsy, Emily Mortimer as Jane Banks, and Colin Firth as William Weatherall Wilkins,” writes the Variety.Hollywood Reporter gives a positive review about the film’s first look. It writes, “Disney is hoping ‘Mary Poppins’ fans will once again feel supercalifragilisticexpialidocious when they see the upcoming sequel, ‘Mary Poppins Returns.’”The film releases in theaters in the U.S.A on December 19, 2018 and in the U.K on December 21, 2018.The film opens on August 19, 2018 at Les Trois Luxembourg, Paris. 67 Rue Monsieur le Prince, 75006 Paris, France. For details, visit: http://www.lestroisluxembourg.com/ Click on the slideshow for a sneak peek at stills from the film. www.blouinartinfo.comFounder: Louise Blouin
