“Espaece” makes its New York premiere at BAM in June 2019.“An enormous moveable wall splits and folds like a book. Five performers — three dancers, a soprano (Claire Lefilliatre), and an acrobat — navigate this imposing monolith to create a shapeshifting tableau. Aurelien Bory’s intrepid physical theater is inspired by the life and work of writer-trickster Georges Perec, best known for his wordplay and droll wit. Using Perec’s ‘Species of Spaces’ as a jumping off point and diving into a physical riddle of arrivals and departures, presence and absence, ‘Espaece’ stretches the void of the stage and destabilizes our expectations to moody and mischievous effect,” states the BAM website. The crew includes conception, scenography, and direction by Aurelien Bory, lighting design by Arno Veyrat, music by Joan Cambon, set design by Pierre Dequivre, and costumes by Sylvie Marcucci and Manuela Agnesini. The show has been produced by Compagnie 111 – Aurelien Bory.“I choose as a title a word that does not exist. Which has no meaning. Which owes its form to two superimposed words, species and space, contained in the title of the book ‘Species of Spaces’ by Georges Perec, my point of departure for this show. This superposition is the one I explore in my approach to the theater: to put the species in space or even more, to make the species and the space coincide,” says Aurelien Bory about the show.He further adds that “while pacing Perec's book, I kind of run a program. I start from the first sentence of ‘Species of Spaces’ — ‘the object of this book is not exactly the void, it would be rather what is around or inside.’ And I apply it to the void of the stage. I walk the plateau, physically, literally. I integrate its dimensions, I test the physical laws that cross it, I observe the machinery. I look around. The around is the only possible path that leads me inside. The emptiness of the plateau contains all the forms, all the spectacles. The surrounding is the place of traces. It is also the place of this particular trace that is writing.”The opera will be on stage from June 20, 2019 through June 22, 2019  at Peter Jay Sharp Building, BAM Howard Gilman Opera HouseFor details, visit: https://www.bam.org/music/2018/espaeceClick on the slideshow for a sneak peek at stills from the opera. http://www.blouinartinfo.com Founder: Louise Blouin
