Giacomo Puccini’s “Turandot” will be on stage at Oper Koln, Germany. The opera, presented in three acts, features libretto by G. Adami and R. Simoni after the eponymous play by Carlo Gozzi, and music by Giacomo Puccini (1858 - 1924).“With ‘Nessun dorma ...,’ the first words of what is probably Puccini's most famous tenor, Prince Kalaf takes up the homonymous imperial decree: on pain of the death penalty, the inhabitants of Beijing are required to find out his name in the absence of sleep. The Tartar prince was able to do what no one else had done before: he has solved the three riddles that Princess Turandot has set for each of her candidates. Not only did he unexpectedly save his head, but he also acquired the right to marry the princess. Since this, contrary to the agreement, is not really ready, the prince has — voluntarily, with renewed commitment of his life — the ultimatum asked to find out his name within a night…,” states the Oper Koln website. The website gives further details that “Princess Turandot had expected all that, but not having to surrender to a man. Referring to a legendary princess who took her life after a rape for a long time, she has so far successfully escaped any rapprochement of the men and rid herself of all the candidates through the deadly guesswork. Now — at the beginning of the second half of this opera — her only chance of being ‘unrecognized’ is to find out the name of the prince. It was to remain Puccini's last opera, and in none of his works does the approach of the central ‘lovers’ to one another be more dangerous and enigmatic than here. Until the end, it's all about awakening the woman's love.”With this production, the young, highly regarded director Lydia Steier appeared for the first time at Cologne (Koln). At the podium Maestro Claude Schnitzler, last saw success at Cologne with Puccini's "Madama Butterfly,""La Boheme," and Jules Massenet's "Manon."The opera will be on stage from September 16 through October 25, 2018 at Rheinparkweg 1, 50679 Koln, GermanyFor details, visit: http://www.oper.koeln/de/programm/turandot/3922Click on the slideshow for a sneak peek at the opera. http://www.blouinartinfo.com Founder: Louise Blouin
