Indian Fantasy Film in Venice Film Festival's Critics' Week

Sohum Shah's “Tumbbad” will open Venice Film Festival's Critics' Week on August 9, 2018.“Tumbbad” is co-directed by Rai Anil Barve and Adesh Prasad and is being sold internationally by Eros International. Tumbbad is set to release on October 12, in Hindi and other three Indian vernacular languages Marathi, Tamil and Telugu.The festival’s website describes the Indian fantasy film as a “parable about greed that travels at the speed of an Emilio Salgari’s story shot by Steven Spielberg.”The segment in which the film will be shown will run parallel to the 75th edition of the main festival, featuring nine films by first time directors from across the globe. Giona Nazzaro, the section's artistic director, has called the 19th-century-set film "a thrilling rollercoaster ride"."Fantasy, action, frights, and scares: Tumbbad has it all," Nazzaro said in a statement. Sudanese director Hajooj Kuka's “A Kasha,” German director Andreas Goldstein's “Adam & Evelyn,” Italian director Letizia Lamartire's “We'll Be Young and Beautiful,” Montenegrin Ivan Salatic's “You Have the Night,” director duo Alexia Walther and Maxime Matray's “Blonde Animals,” and Finnish director Anna Eriksoon's “M” are the other seven films, competing for the $100,000 prize money.The voting in the Critics Week section is done by festival-goers and not a pre-determined  jury.Taking to Twitter Sohum Shah wrote, "I'm very excited to share with you that Tumbbad will be the opening film of the prestigious Venice Film Festival's Critics' Week,"Sohum Shah is a producer, actor,author, blogger and entrepreneur. A University of Arizona alumnus, Shah studied finance and information systems. He ventured into film production with the critically acclaimed Anand Gandhi’s “Ship of Theseus” in 2012 which delved into the subject of organ donation in India. Film review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes gave the film a 100% based on 10 reviews.The premise of the film was that if the parts of a ship are replaced,one-by-one, is it still the same ship or is it a new one ? Shah, the man with multifarious modes has certainly come a long way.His latest project as an actor “Tumbbad” can be be the turning point for Shah as an actor. Now that the film is opening at such a prestigious festival Shah may get inducted among the big league of actors in India. “Tumbbad” is the opening film of 2018’s Venice Film Festival's Critics' Week, an achievement of sorts for the entire team of the film. The film is produced by Liittle Town Films production in association with Colour Yellow Productions.
