London’s Genesis Cinema is presently screening the 2017 American drama film “The Florida Project.”Directed by Sean Baker and written by Baker and Chris Bergoch, “The Florida Project” is a poignant look at childhood and poses some pertinent questions about parenthood. It is set on a stretch of highway just outside the expected utopia of Disney World. The film tells the story of six-year-old Moonee, played by Brooklynn Prince and her rebellious mother Halley Bria Vinai, over the period of a single summer. Mother and daughter live at “The Magic Castle,” a budget hotel managed by Bobby (Willem Dafoe), whose tough exterior shields a deep reservoir of compassion. The environment is definitely not an apt place for a child to grow up, but the intelligent and enterprising Moonee manages to make each day of life a celebration of life. Her long afternoons are filled with mischief and adventure as she and her playmates—including Jancey, a new arrival who soon becomes Moon’s best friend explore without fear the unique world they’ve been thrust into. Little does little Moonee know that to support her puerile fantasy, her mother has to sacrifice a lot. Halley tries hard to make ends meet but finds it difficult to earn enough money to give her child a decent upbringing. She is forced to explore increasingly dangerous ways so she can provide for her daughter Moonee.“The Florida Project” premiered at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival Directors' Fortnight section and was theatrically released by A24 in the US on October 6, 2017.
