The San Diego Civic Theatre will be staging Mozart’s “The Marriage of Figaro” from October 20-28.“The Marriage of Figaro (Le nozze di Figaro) is a comic opera in four acts composed in 1786 by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. The libretto in Italian was written by Lorenzo Da Ponte. It first premiered in Vienna on May 1, 1786 at the Burgtheater. The opera's libretto is based on a stage comedy by Pierre Beaumarchais, “La folle journee, ou le Mariage de Figaro (The Mad Day orThe Marriage of Figaro),” that was first performed in 1784. The story is about how servants Figaro and Susanna finally get married, in spite of the advances of Count Almaviva, their philandering employer who wanted to seduce Susanna.Comprising some of the most recognizable music ever written for the opera stage by Mozart and Da Ponte, the opera shows the rise of the servant class as they defeat the intentions of the ruling class with biting satire, humor and wit. Right from the opening notes upto the final curtain, Mozart’s score delivers a jumbled love story that has been loved by audiences for generations. The opera consistently appears among the top ten in the Operabase list of the most frequently performed operas.“The Marriage of Figaro” continues the plot of “The Barber of Seville” several years later, and recounts a single "day of madness" in the palace of Count Almaviva near Seville, Spain. Rosina got married to the Count is now the Countess; Dr. Bartolo is still on vengeance sprees against Figaro for stifling his plans to marry Rosina himself; and Count Almaviva is no longer the young romantic lover he used to be; he has turned into a scheming, bullying and skirt-chasing disgraceful man.The conductor of the opera is John Nelson while Stephen Lawless is the director. The cast comprises of John Moore as Count Almaviva, Nicholas Brownlee as Figaro, Caitlin Lynch as Countess, Sarah Shafer as Susanna, Emily Fons as Cherubino and Susanne Mentzer as Marcellina. The Opera is performed in Italian with projected English translations. The “Marriage of Figaro will be staged from October 20 through October 28, 2018 at San Diego Opera, 233 A Street, Suite 500,San Diego, CA 92101For details, visit https://www.sdopera.org/season/2018-2019-season/figaroClick on the slideshow for a sneak peek at a previous production.http://www.blouinartinfo.com Founder: Louise Blouin
