“Wild Wild Country,” a documentary series on controversial Indian godman Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh (Osho) is currently being screened on Netflix. The six-part series, by brothers Maclain and Chapman Way, delves into the life and times of spiritual guru Rajneesh, also known as Osho, his one-time personal assistant Ma Anand Sheela and the Rajneeshpuram community of followers located in Wasco County, Oregon.Hailed as the guru, spiritual teacher and mystic, Osho’s gargantuan following had became a concern for the authorities. The first things that come to mind when Rajneesh is mentioned is free sex, mass hypnosis, a following comprising movie stars and a passion for all things rich. Many branded Osho as a dangerous cult leader, master criminal and terroristAccording to a review of the documentary on The Guardian published in April 2018, the film leaves no stone unturned in portraying the life of one of history’s most controversial godmen. There definitely was more to what met the eye. It wasn’t just about a bunch of stoic, brainwashed hippies waving their arms in the air and loving whomever they fancied, there was more to it. “Wild Wild Country” has all the prerequisite elements for compulsory viewing. It has the fear and loathing, paranoia and megalomania. Add to this attempted murder, bombs, Learjets, the FBI, the National Guard, espionage, drugs, the biggest immigration fraud case in US history, biological warfare, an arms race, automatic weaponry, bombs, the biggest immigration fraud case in US history, wire-tapping, a sad subplot involving 6,000 homeless people, Hollywood glitz, Nike, the US constitution getting waved about by various people. There are extensive interviews with a bevy of people who were close to the man, most notably Sheela, now out of jail (for attempted murder and assault). She now lives in Switzerland, and works in a nursing home. It is actually a story from Sheela’s point of view. Other people interviewed are the residents of Antelope, followers of Rajneesh, attorneys for both sides, attorney generals, politicians and investigative journalists.Wild Wild Country is currently streaming on Netflix.http://www.blouinartinfo.com Founder: Louise Blouin
