“Lady Bird”, the 2017 American comedy coming-of-age drama film, is being screened at the Tilsiter Lichtspiele, Berlin till August 7.Written and directed by Greta Gerwig, the film stars Saoirse Ronan, Laurie Metcalf, Tracy Letts, Lucas Hedges, Timothee Chalamet, Beanie Feldstein, Stephen McKinley Henderson, and Lois Smith.Set in Sacramento, California, in 2002, the film is an engaging and entertaining story of a high-school senior who likes to be known by the alias Ladybird, instead of her real name. Her relationship with her mother is not an easy going one.Ladybird disagrees with her mother on almost every issue and vice versa. Christine "Lady Bird" McPherson is a senior student at a Catholic high school in Sacramento but it’s her dream to get out of there and attend a prestigious college in "a city with culture". All the colleges of her choice are on the East Coast. Her family is struggling financially,her father has lost his job and has been long coping with his manic depression. Her mother tells her that Lady Bird is ungrateful for what she has.Lady Bird and her best friend Julie join their school theater program, where Lady Bird meets Danny O'Neill. They develop a romantic relationship, and she has Thanksgiving dinner with Danny's wealthy family instead of her own, which disappoints her mother. Ladybird ends her relationship with Danny when she discovers that he is gay. On her mother’s insistence Lady Bird takes a job at a coffee shop, where she meets Kyle, a young musician she recognizes from a show he had done the previous semester. They begin dating. Jenna, one of the popular girls in school is reprimanded by a nun for wearing a short skirt. Lady Bird, who is impressed by Jenna popularity with men, suggests that they must together vandalize the nun's car. As Lady Bird grows closer to Kyle and Jenna, she deserts Julie. Things with Kyle don’t turn out the way Ladybird had planned and that leaves her shattered.A call from an East Coast College is the only thing on her mind, as her father has managed for some loans. Good news finally comes for Ladybird but at the cost of losing her mother’s faith forever. The film closes on now Ladybird and her mother finally show their love for each other.The film premiered at the Telluride Film Festival on September 1, 2017, and was released in the US in November, 2017 by A24.
