Totem is the new touring show by Cirque du Soleil, the company known for their on stage powerhouse performances. The show premiered in Montreal in 2010. It was written and directed by Robert Lepage. Cirque du Soleil describes the theme of Totem as the evolution of humanity from its primitive; amphibian state toward the aspiration of flight, the show takes inspiration from many of humanity's founding myths. Totem was awarded the 2013 New York Drama Desk Award for Unique Theatrical Experience.Cirque du Soleil is a French term meaning "Circus of the Sun" or "Sun Circus". It is a Canadian entertainment company and the world’s largest theatrical producer. Based in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, and located in the inner-city area of Saint-Michael, the company was founded by two former street performers, Guy Laliberte and Gilles Ste-Croix in Baie-Saint-Paul on July 7, 1984.Their shows are primarily a synthesis of circus styles from around the world, having its own central theme and storyline. Shows have continuous live music, with performers and not stagehands changing the props. Cirque du Soleil expanded rapidly during the 1990s and 2000s, going from one show to 19 shows in more than 270 cities on every continent. The shows employ approximately 4,000 people from over 40 countries. Around 90 million people have experienced Cirque du Soleil's shows worldwide. All of Cirque du Soleil's earlier touring productions were originally meant to be performed inside large, custom-designed tents also called the grand chapiteau), but with the scale of the production getting bigger many shows have since been re-staged in larger arenas and other venues. Since its inception, the creative team of Totem was faced with the of designing a show that could be adapted for arenas and other venues.Cirque du Soleil used certain interactive projection technologies that enhance and provide variety to the kind of scenes created for Totem, which including swamps, starry nights, lakes, volcanoes, and other natural environments. The moving images are created using infrared cameras; the projection system can create dynamic projections, making it look as if they are reacting to the artists' movements, both in the real-time and pre-recorded sequences. The large turtle carapace is one of the major elements for the set, which functions as both an acrobatic equipment as well as a decorative piece. When not in use, this shell is either tilted or raised completely to the top of the arena or tent.Cirque du Soleil’s creations have received a host of prizes and distinctions, which include a Bambi Award in 1997, a Rose d'Or in 1989, three Drama Desk Awards in 1991, 1998 and 2013, three Gemini Awards, four Primetime Emmy Awards, and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. In the year 2000, Cirque du Soleil was awarded the National Arts Centre Award, a companion award of the Governor General's Performing Arts Awards. In 2002, the company was inducted into Canada's Walk of Fame.Totem opens on January 9, 2019 and runs through February 9, 2019 at Royal Albert Hall, Kensington Gore, Kensington, London SW7 2APFor details, visit: www.royalalberthall.comClick on the slideshow for a sneak peek at Totem.http://www.blouinartinfo.com                                 Founder: Louise Blouin
