Glyndebourne in Lewes, East Sussex, will be hosting a performance of “Ariadne auf Naxos” from June 25 through July 27, 2017.Originally composed by Richard Strauss, the opera will be a part of Glyndebourne’s Festival 2017. Directed by Katharina Thoma and conducted by Cornelius Meister, the performance will be sung in German with English supertitles, telling a story of a troupe of tragic actors and a gaggle of comedians arriving at a country estate to provide entertainment, but in a chaotic situation. The two troupes had to perform simultaneously, highlighting the eternal tensions between ‘high’ and ‘low’ art, and the very purpose of art and music. Richard Strauss’ late-Romantic score blends rapturous lyricism, vocal virtuosity and catchy comic turns, while Katharina Thoma’s imaginative production raises the dramatic stakes and brings the drama close to home. The performance will take place at Glyndebourne, New Road, Lewes BN8 5UU, UK.
