Georg Friedrich Händel’s ‘Jephtha’ at the Dutch National Opera, Amsterdam

Claus Guth’s production of Händel’s “Jephtha” is on show at the Dutch National Opera in Amsterdam through November 27, 2016.The opera, which follows the Biblical parable of a commander-in-chief whose hasty promise to God almost costs him the life of his daughter, was written while the Baroque composer was beginning to lose his eyesight. Guth, who made his international breakthrough with Berio’s “Cronaca del Luogo” in 1999, directs this adaptation of the alternately tragic and hopeful masterpiece, which is co-produced by the Opera National de Paris.
