Glyndebourne in Lewes, East Sussex will host the performance titled ‘La Traviata’ from May 21, 2017 through August 27, 2017.Originally composed by Giuseppe Verdi, this opera is a part of Festival 2017 at Glyndebourne. Directed by Tom Cairns, the opera will be sung in Italian with English supertitles, telling the story of Violetta, a courtesan and Alfredo, a young man from the provinces who falls in love with her, and how their dreams of domestic bliss are threatened by both a merciless society that condemns Violetta’s past and an equally merciless decease. Giuseppe Verdi’s version of this opera is based on the true story of Marie Duplessis, a Parisian courtesan immortalized by her lover, whose story drew Verdi at a point of his career when he was focussing on the vivid and complex characters that push the boundary of the society. The visual beauty of director Tom Cairn’s production thoroughly echoes the irresistible allure of this beloved opera. The opera will take place at Glyndebourne, New Road, Lewes BN8 5UU, UK.
