A production of Peter Wright’s “The Nutcracker” is on show at the Royal Opera House in London through January 12, 2017.The Royal Ballet presents master choreographer Wright’s much-loved production of the spectacular classic in celebration of his 90th birthday. The show, which is based on ETA Hoffmann’s fairytale about the impatient young Clara and her adventures with the magician Drosselmeyer, was written after the immense success of “The Sleeping Beauty.” Though “The Nutcracker” opened at St. Petersburg’s Mariinsky Theatre in 1892 to poor reviews, its arrangement of exhilarating choreography and poignant music has since made it one of the most popular ballets of all time. With stage design reminiscent of 19th century images of Christmas and the atmospheric lighting by Mark Henderson, Wright’s version is a festive treat.“Tchaikovsky: The Nutcracker” runs at the Royal Opera House, Bow Street, Covent Garden, London WC2E 9DD.For details, visit: www.roh.org.ukClick on the slideshow for a sneak peek at the production
