“Modern Cinema: Criterion Collection and Apichatpong Weerasethakul,” co-presented by SFMOMA and the San Francisco Film Society will run from October 7 through October 23, 2016, at Phyllis Wattis Theater, San Francisco. This new film series discovers the dynamic forces interacting between cinemas' past and present. The inaugural program will honor the Criterion Collection and its sister concern Janus Films, who have championed filmmakers and films that have made a significant impact on critics, audiences, and artists alike. The program brings to the viewers a canon of work that showcases the defining moments of cinema. Thai director Apichatpong Weerasethakul, whose video installation Phantoms of Nabua is featured at SFMOMA, draws on this history of filmmaking. His work celebrates ghostlike characters that are caught between the thin veil of life and death. The film series is will be screened at Phyllis Wattis Theater, 151 3rd St, San Francisco, CA 94103.
