Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), New York, is hosting an exhibition 'Tony Oursler: Imponderable', on view through January 8, 2017.'Imponderable' brings out an alternative presentation of modernism that reveals the intersection of technological advancements and occult phenomena over the last two centuries. It is an immersive feature-length film, presented in a 5-D cinematic environment. The film is inspired by Tony Oursler’s own archive of ephemera related to stage magic, spirit photography, pseudoscience, telekinesis, and other paranormal manifestations. Drawing on these objects, 'Imponderable' binds together a social, spiritual and empirical history of virtual images, featuring characters like Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Harry Houdini, Mina ‘Margery’ Crandon and members of the artist’s own family, portrayed by a cast of artists, musicians and performers including Kim Gordon, Jim Fletcher, Keith Sanborn and Constance DeJong. Bringing together the artist’s fascination in mysticism, psychedelia, popular culture and media history, the work generates lurid humor and theatrical surrealism to reflect on the relationship between belief systems and authenticity of images. The exhibition is on view at Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), 11 West 53rd Street, New York, NY 10019, United States.
