The Renaissance Society at the University of Chicago is hosting an exhibition “Urth” by Ben Rivers that will be on view through November 6, 2016.The exhibition is the first US solo exhibition by the London-based artist and experimental filmmaker Ben Rivers, featuring a newly commissioned film presented alongside two recent works. The title of the film “Urth” is taken from the Old Norse word suggesting the twisted threads of fate, as mentioned by philosopher Timothy Morton. The films in this exhibition share an interest in utopias, particularly the tension between the desires for an idealized world and the impossibilities of its existence. For this exhibition, The Renaissance Society commissioned the artist to produce a new film, also titled “Urth,” which he filmed at Arizona’s Biosphere 2. This new work imagines a scientist living alone inside an experimental ecosystem, representing a cinematic meditation on ambition experiments, artificial environments and visions for the future. The exhibition is on view at The Renaissance Society at The University of Chicago, Cobb Hall, 4th Floor, 5811 S. Ellis Ave, Chicago, Illinois 60637, USA. For details, view http://www.renaissancesociety.org/Click on the slideshow for a sneak peek of the exhibition
