Datebook: New Production of 'Hamlet' at the National Theater of Korea

In celebration of the 100th anniversary of the birth of the late Lee Haerang, the National Theater of Korea staged a new production of "Hamlet" in July, which is showing until August 8. The play brings together the finest actors from the Korean theater circuit such as Yoo Inchon, Yoon Seokhwa, Jung Donghwan, and Son Sook. The play is directed by Lee Haerang Theater Award-winner Son Jinchaek. Veteran actor Yoo Inchon dons the role of Hamlet in this production.Lee Haerang started his career as an actor and later became a director for the stage. He is renowned for bringing the play to the Korean stage.Shakespeare's "Hamlet" weaves the tale of a prince blinded by rage against his uncle and mother, urged by his father’s ghost to exact revenge, ushering in his own downfall in the process. This production of "Hamlet" also commemorates the 400th anniversary of William Shakespeare’s death.
