Somerset House has premiered another series of new posters of classic films in the exhibition “Summer Screen Prints,” which runs at the venue until August 17.For this exhibition, established and emerging artists created new prints inspired by the films featuring in the “Summer Screen” series of outdoor cinema screenings at Somerset House. It features works inspired by classics such as “Trainspotting,” “Walkabout,” and “Sunset Boulevard,” as well as posters for films having their UK premieres during the event, including the Viggo Mortensen-starring family drama “Captain Fantastic,” opening night selection “Things to Come (L’avenir),” and Pedro Almodóvar’s “Julieta.”A highlight from among the exhibition’s 17 prints is by Cassandra Yap, whose collage print of Francis Ford Coppola’s “Bram Stoker’s Dracula” features a femme fatale with the face of a wolf, and has all the sensuality and Baroque ridiculousness of its cinematic inspiration. Another standout is a minimalist take on the recent Alicia Vikander and Oscar Isaac-starring sci-fi “Ex Machina” by Concepción Studios, featuring Vikander’s character in profile alongside small drawings of scenes from the film and abstract hexagons.Other artists present a more literal take on their films. Daisy Emerson’s “10 Things I Hate About You” print, for instance, captures the stylized teenage life depicted in that movie, featuring the film's oft-repeated phrase “Bite Me” set within the pastel colors worn by guidance counselor Ms. Perky (Allison Janney). Similarly, Lilly Lou’s poster for Billy Wilder’s masterpiece “Sunset Boulevard” offers a summation of its central character Norma Desmond (Gloria Swanson), with the line “she is a bird trapped in a gilded cage of her own making” in a vintage font.“Summer Screen Prints” runs through August 17 at Somerset House.
