Following the mass shooting in a Munich shopping center last week, the Bavarian State Opera and its partner BMW Group have cancelled their “Opera for All” live-stream of Richard Wagner’s “Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg,” scheduled for July 31. The event would have coincided with the public memorial for the victims of the shooting and their families. While the "Meistersinger"will be performed at the Nationaltheater, there will be no live broadcast outside the opera as originally intended. “We feel it is not the right time for a summer open air event in front of the Staatsoper while people are grieving nearby,” the State Opera and BMW Group state in a joint press release.Last Friday, an 18-year old Iranian-German teenager had run amok in a popular Munich shopping center, shooting nine people, most of them teenagers, and injuring 26 before committing suicide. The young man is said to have had psychological problems and was apparently inspired by Norwegian right-wing activist and mass-murderer Anders Breivik. The Munich mass-killing was followed on Sunday by a suicide bombing in the Bavarian town of Ansbach, where a Syrian refugee tried to kill himself at a well frequented open air festival outside a wine bar, but wasn’t admitted for lack of a ticket. He died from the explosion, injuring 15 people.
