Los Angeles-based DJ, producer and multi-instrumentalist Alfred Darlington (or Alfred Weisberg-Roberts), known on the electronic music circuit as Daedelus, is coming to India in July to perform in three cities. Having earned industry cred by releasing 15 albums in the last 14 years, Daedelus combines genres like bossa nova, classical, hip hop, jazz, drum ’n bass, house, techno and sci fi electronica, and is regular feature on music festivals such as Coachella, Lollapalooza and SXSW.Besides adopting the name of the mythological Greek inventor as his moniker, Darlington cuts a striking figure during his gigs as he chooses to style himself like a Victorian dandy on stage, behind his walnut wood panelled Monome audio controller. His genre-exploding musical style, too, has a romantic quality and is often referential, harking back to past time or sentimentalities. But all this doesn’t take away from its inherent dancefloor worthiness. His classical background in jazz, specifically double bass and bass clarinet, inspired him to discover and adopt the Monome, an electronic instrument that satisfies his hankering for varied performance possibilities that, in his opinion, a laptop couldn’t offer.Daedelus is an inventor of sounds, right from his first album “Invention” in 2002 which combined ’50s sci-fi, big band, jazz, space age pop and hip hop to his latest release “The Light Brigade” which leans towards ambient and folk, and uses the 1853-56 Crimean War and the recent conflict in the region as a backdrop and theme for the album.This India tour will see the prolific DJ perform in Delhi, Bangalore and Mumbai.
