TO Ensemble’s “Journeys” at The Esplanade, Singapore

Tze Toh’s versatile TO ensemble takes center stage at Singapore’s Esplanade on August 11. The Esplanade website mentions that the ensemble is fresh from its successful tour of Europe with a string of performances in Holland, Poland and Norway. Now, award-winning composer Tze Toh and TO ensemble returns with a series of brand new works. A lovely set of portraits of the breathtaking and vibrant cities of Amsterdam, Delft, Trondheim and Szczecin, present a journey weaving a fascinating musical drapery of Germanic, Nordic, Slavic and Asian cultures.You get to experience the splendor and natural beauty of these diverse cities through one well crafted soundscape presented in TO ensemble's quintessential musical language. It’s an eclectic contemporary fusion that brings together various genres. While it has the splendor of film music, it also contains some groundbreaking live collective jazz with carnatic improvisation, given its final form with a well executed soundscape design.TO ensemble of Singapore is acclaimed as an innovative contemporary music ensemble. They create multi-disciplinary performances in a bid to explore the symbiotic relationships between Man, Technology and Nature.  Their music is original and encapsulates myriad musical cultures like jazz, film scores, classical music and Asian sounds. Created in 2007 by Tze Toh, the award-winning composer-pianist, the ensemble seeks innovation and authenticity in each of their creations.This must be attributed to Tze Toh whom The Straits Times has described as "an extraordinary musician whose idiom straddles seamlessly between the genres of classical, jazz, world and film music.” Toh is also respected for his original voice. Toh's website mentions that he composed the original score for “Snails and Ketchup,” Ramesh Meyyappan's critically acclaimed theatre piece and also for “Sing to the Dawn,” Singapore's first animated film. To his credit, Toh has also composed for Discovery Channel, Epson, Rosewood and SAP. He has performed with his jazz ensembles at the Asean Jazz Festival and Indonesia Music Expo (IMEX) among others.The Business Times has described TO ensemble's music as “sophisticated and accessible." Their group debut album titled “Stories from Wonderland,” which was previously recorded under the name “Tze n Looking Glass” was selected as one of the top 10 albums of 2011. TO ensemble has performed for the Journey of Youth Olympic Flame 2010 in Auckland, SIFOM, The Singapore International Festival of Music in 2016, the Titian Budaya Festival in 2015, Singapore Heritage Festival in 2017 and Esplanade's MOSAIC Music Festival, among others.
