SSO National Day Concert at The Esplanade, Singapore

Singapore celebrates its 53rd National Day with a concert celebrating Singaporean identity on August 11. The programme conducted by Darrell Ang, features six homegrown composers comprising of doyens Leong Yoon Pin and Phoon Yew Tien, to the upcoming musicians like Wang Chen Wei and Syafiqah 'Adha Mohd Sallehin. Accomplished violinist Kam Ning is the soloist in Chen Zhangyi’s Vanda Concerto, while the Singapore Symphony’s family choirs come together in Kelly Tang’s arrangement of what is now known as classic “Home”.Darrell Ang is a well known conductor not just in Asia; he has also made a name for himself across horizons. Born in Singapore, Darell is a regular guest with some of the greatest orchestras like the Royal Philharmonic, the Mariinsky Theatre, Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, The Philharmonia, London Philharmonic, Royal Liverpool, Orchestre National de Lyon, Munich Radio, Konzerthausorchester Berlin, NHK Symphony, Yomiuri Nippon and the Hong Kong Philharmonic, to name a few.Darell trained at St. Petersburg and Yale. He music mentors were Lorin Maazel, Sir Colin Davis and Esa-Pekka Salonen.Kam Ning, the violinist is also the daughter of Kam Kee Yong, the violinist-composer and granddaughter of Kam Beng Soo and Ooi Kooi Aun. Born in 1975, she received her first violin lessons at the tender age of six from senior Kam. She was then enrolled at the Methodist Girls' School for her early education. Ning’s urge to learn more resulted in her receiving a scholarship in 1987 from the Lee Foundation and Shaw Foundation to study at the prestigious Yehudi Menuhin School. Here Ning attended lessons  conducted by Lord Menuhin himself.  The 11 year old then went on to collaborate with Menuhin in a series of chamber and orchestral performances. During her second year at the school, Ning performed with the Wren Orchestra of London at the Royal Festival Hall. This was soon followed with her house full debut performance at Singapore’s Victoria Concert Hall. Ning further studied music at the Curtis Institute of Music from where she earned her bachelor's degree. She then pursued her Masters from the Cleveland Institute of Music in 2001, under the guidance of Donald Weilerstein.Kam Ning has performed with world renowned orchestras like the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, the City of London Sinfonia, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, the National Orchestra of Belgium, Malaysian Philharmonic, Helsinki Philharmonic, the Luxembourg Philharmonic, and Toronto Symphony, to name a few. As an artist, Nang always like to transcend conventions and venturing off in search of something new.
