“Puzzle,” an American drama film is a closely observed portrait of Agnes, who has reached her early 40s without ever venturing far from home, family, or the tight-knit immigrant community in which she was raised by her widowed father. Life begins to change in a quietly dramatic fashion when Agnes receives a jigsaw puzzle as a birthday gift and experiences the heady thrill of not just doing something she enjoys, but being very, very, good at it.The film premiered at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival. Sony Pictures Classics acquired the worldwide rights of the film and released it on July 27, 2018. The cast includes Kelly Macdonald (Agnes), Irrfan Khan (Robert), David Denman (Louie), and Bubba Weiler (Ziggy).“This wistful observation, spoken by one of the competitive jigsaw puzzlers at the center of ‘Puzzle,’ articulates the subtle lure of puzzles in this quietly surprising character drama,” writes the Sony Pictures website. As said by Peter Saraf, one of the film’s producers, “You think of jigsaw puzzling as something incredibly solitary and inward, something that pulls you into smaller world, but in ‘Puzzle,’ this very solitary activity actually opens up the world for our heroine.”“‘Puzzle’ is adapted from the Argentine film ‘Rompecabezas’ (Spanish for puzzle) written and directed by Natalia Smirnoff and set in Buenos Aires. ‘Puzzle’ was shot for approximately six weeks in the spring of 2017 first in Yonkers and then moved into the Manhattan townhouse that serves as Robert’s posh but strangely hollow habitat,” writes the website. Annie Baker and Oren Moverman wrote the script. “Rompecabezas” directed by Natalia Smirnoff was nominated for the Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival 2010.Peter Debruge from Variety described the remake of the well-liked Argentine film as a way for “Kelly Macdonald to shine amid the yawn-inducing world of competitive jigsaw puzzling.” Kate Erbland from IndieWire gave the film a grade of “B+” and said that Macdonald “excels in the rare drama that follows a woman’s own journey to self-actualization,” and that the film “toes a tough line, managing to stay relentlessly good-hearted and deeply humane, even as Agnes herself plunges into deeper, more dramatic waters.”Macdonald recently wrapped work on Fox Searchlight’s “Goodbye Christopher Robin” with Margot Robbie and Domhnall Gleeson, and Sony’s “Holmes and Watson” with Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly. Her credits include “T2 Trainspotting” and voice starring in “Brave.”Khan’s credits include “Inferno” with Tom Hanks, “Jurassic World” with Chris Pratt and Ang Lee’s “Life of Pi.”The film opened on August 4 and is on view through August 9, 2018 at City Cinemas, New York.
