“Nico 1988” is written and directed by Susanna Nicchiarelli and is based on the last years of life of the German singer and ex-model Christa Paffgen, known as Nico. The film stars Trine Dyrholm, John Gordon Sinclair, Anamaria Marinca, Sandor Funtek, Karina Fernandez, Calvin Demba, and Francesco Colella.“Set between Paris, Prague, Nuremberg, Manchester, the Polish countryside, and the Roman seaside, ‘Nico 1988’ is a road-movie dedicated to the last years of Christa Paffgen, known as Nico. One of Warhol’s muses, singer of The Velvet Underground and a woman of legendary beauty, Nico lived a second life after the story known to all, when she began her career as a solo artist. ‘Nico, 1988’ is the story of Nico’s last tours with the band that accompanied her around Europe in the ‘80s — years in which the ‘priestess of darkness’, as she was called, found herself again, shaking off the weight of her beauty and rebuilding the relationship with her only forgotten son. It is the story of rebirth, of an artist, of a mother, of the woman beyond the icon,” writes the FSK Kino, Berlin website.“Christa Paffgen, known professionally as Nico, is tumbling down the slope of heroin addiction as ‘Nico, 1988’ opens. Concentrating on her band’s disastrous tour from Manchester, England, to Italy and East Europe, writer-director Susanna Nicchiarelli dives deeply into the uncelebrated years of life of a tragic but remarkable woman, memorably portrayed by Danish actress and singer Trine Dyrholm as an unpleasant, hurtful junkie plagued with memories and regrets,” writes Hollywood Reporter.“Winner of Berlin’s best actress award in 2016 for her role in Thomas Vinterberg’s ‘The Commune,’ Trine Dyrholm is at her multifaceted best here in the glammed-down role of an older rock ‘n' roll star on the skids,” adds Hollywood Reporter.“This is the story of Nico after Nico,” Nicchiarelli said in a statement. “The biopic made its US debut at the Tribeca film festival earlier this year and focuses on the singer’s Dolce Vita years when she attracted lovers like Jim Morrison, Jackson Browne, and Alain Delon. Much of the movie follows the singer on the road in Europe, as she tussles with her band, a largely untalented group of misfits. Nicchiarelli sees in Nico’s rejection of beauty a kind of strength,” writes Guardian quoting the director as saying, “While many women and men don’t accept that we change, she dealt with it. At the same time, she was very careful about her new look. She always dyed her hair and she always wore makeup, even if it was weird. She would paint her face white.”Nicchiarelli is known on the festival circuit for her standout debut “Cosmonauta,” which played in Venice in 2009. Nicchiarelli’s screenplay draws on interviews with Ari and with Alan Wise, Nico’s then-manager.“Nico 1988” released in the UK on May 9 and in the US in August. The film opened on August 4, 2018 at FSK Kino, Berlin and is on view through August 15, 2018.
