‘LADAMA’ at Opéra de Lyon

As part of the ongoing Festival du Peristyle, Latin alternative band, LADAMA will be performing at Opera de Lyon on August 8. The group comprises of four women musicians who are activists too. They are Daniela Serna, Mafer Bandola, Sara Lucas and Lara Klaus. Daniela is from Colombia, Mafer is from Venezuela, Sara from the US and Lara comes from Brazil. American bassist Pat Swoboda has been their collaborator right since they began.LADAMA’s music is a fusion of South American, Caribbean, R&B, and pop sounds. Apart from their public performances, they also conduct educational workshops in English, Spanish, and Portuguese. The endeavor is to build a foundation for participants enabling them to use music in forming a personal expression they can use to address issues that are important to them. They continue to perform and offer workshops at venues and festivals across the world. With their music and numerous initiatives, LADAMA wants to empower women and the youth. This does not disqualify others from attending their shows or workshops. These are a unique kind of interactive musical experiences that are beneficial to everyone, irrespective of their gender and age.The quartet came into existence while they were touring the West Coast in 2014, as part of the OneBeat Program. In September, 2017, LADAMA releases their self-titled debut album Six Degrees Records. By January 2018, the album reached the No. 1 position both on iTunes and Amazon’s Latin Music Charts. “LADAMA,” the album consists mostly of newly written songs performed by the band members, and is an amalgam of various Latin American musical genres. The group has performed at TED, and the Skoll World Forum.The MembersDaniela Serna is a Bogota-based composer, percussionist, sound artist and educator. She was first noticed in 2012 after she won the Señal Radio Colombia contest to perform with Petrona Martinez , the legendary folk-singer bullerengue queen.Mafer Bandola is a songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who hails from Barquisimeto, Venezuela. Though Mafer learnt the mandolin, the cuatro and the violin, her instrument of choice is the Bandola llanera. In 2018, she was recognized as the world's best female bandola llanera player at the 26th International Bandola Llanera Pedro Flores Festival.Sara Lucas is a New York based singer-songwriter and guitarist. Before LADAMA happened, she had co-founded the band Callers along with Ryan Seaton, with which she produced three full-length albums  and also a seven-inch split with Delicate Steve, the Luaka Bop artist.Lara Klaus is a Brazil-based drummer, singer, percussionist, songwriter and educator. Her percussion instruments include mainly the pandeiro, alfaia, and zabumba.
