3rd Street Gallery, Philadelphia, will host the works of Emma Sulkowicz in an exhibition titled 'The Healing Touch Integral Wellness Center', on view from January 13-30, 2017.Presented by Philadelphia Contemporary, the exhibition unveils the world premier of New York-based American artist and performer Sulkowicz’s project. Over the course of the exhibition, the artist will install a parafictional medical clinic, where she will play the role of the practitioner “Dr.” Emma Sulkowicz MD, providing 30 minutes of one-to-one sessions of revolutionary cure for human desire. Being an American citizen from Japanese-Chinese-Jewish origin, her role as a curative servant Sulkowicz particularly challenges the insufficient appreciation of Asian American women in the service sector in the United States, which Sulkowicz personally experienced during her previous performances- ‘Carry That Weight’ and ‘Self-Portrait (Performance With Object)’, where she was subjected to the quenchless desire of audiences to touch her body. The project will extend the artist’s in-depth research on issues of social interaction, public conversation on rape and women’s role in society, and through its immersive experience, will empower the attendees with a new perspective on the relationship between art and the viewer, between control and vulnerability.The exhibition will be on view at 3rd Street Gallery, 45 North 2nd Street, Philadelphia, PA 19106, USA.
