Mozart’s final opera is a stunning display that takes the form of a tale of initiation. It is the legend of a prince from a faraway land in search of a vaguely suicidal princess. He meets a giant serpent, a boastful braggart bird catcher, the Queen of the Night and a High Priest who imposes odd rites of passage.
