‘Flash Festival,’ fourth biennial hosted by the Chalk Repertory Theatre will run through October 22, 2016, at Los Angeles’ St. John’s Cathedral. The biennial will feature 15 LA playwrights to create a 10-minute play, utilizing 15 directors and performed by 15 teams of actors; 5 news plays performed each weekend over 3 weeks. The plays that are featured are written on the theme of religion and politics. The Chalk Repertory Theatre produces classical and contemporary plays in unconventional spaces. The highlights of the biennial include, ‘Sock Angels’ by Rachel Axler (two-time Emmy-winning comedy writer, currently writes for Veep), Two sock puppets contemplate faith and existence in the courtyard outside a wedding. ‘Ouite Contrary’ by Dorothy Fortenberry (writer on The 100 and the upcoming A Handmaid’s Tale) Three Marys outside Jesus’ tomb have to decide whether to reveal that he has gone missing - which they know will lead to the founding of Christianity and all that comes next. ‘Episode 92’by Cory Hinkle (recipient of numerous playwriting awards and fellowships, 2015 Heideman Award for This Quintessence of Dust) as the co-hosts of an architecture podcast examine the sacred space, they discover their relationship is more complicated than they both think. The biennial is can be attended at St. John’s Cathedral, 514 West Adams Blvd., Los Angeles 90007.
