The controversial and taboo-breaking play of the 1950s ‘A Taste of Honey’ will run through November 27, 2016, at Odyssey Theatre, Los Angeles. Kim Rubinstein the director of the award-winning revival of Anna Christie returns to helm this defining play. Written by Shelagh Delaney, when she was just 18, this play centers on the story Jo, a working-class adolescent girl, and her relationships with Helen, her saloon-frequenting mother, Peter, her mother’s newly acquired husband, Jimmie, the black sailor who makes Jo pregnant and Geoff, the homosexual art student who moves into her apartment to help her through her pregnancy. The play is an honest and harsh depiction of the working-class life in post-war England. One of the first plays to be called a ‘kitchen sink drama,’ yet the characters break the fourth wall to speak to the audience. At the time when the play was written, homosexuality was against the law in England, interracial relationships were taboo and single motherhood was stigmatized. The cast includes Kestrel Leah as Jo, Sarah Underwood Saviano ( Helen), Eric Hunicutt (husband), Gerard Joseph (Jimmie), and Leland Montgomery (Geoff). The play is on view at Odyssey Theatre, 2055 S. Sepulveda Blvd. Los Angeles CA 90025. For details, visit: www.OdysseyTheatre.comClick on the slideshow for a sneak peek of the play.
