The Austrian Film Museum in Vienna is currently hosting the retrospective “Choice of Arms. The French Crime Thriller 1958 – 2009.” Dedicated solely to the French crime cinema genre, the festival will run through October 12.The retrospective looks at the evolution of French crime cinema around 1960, from its classical period into modernity, and the genre’s metamorphosis connected to aesthetic, political, and cultural changes in the society. The arrival of a new generation of directors — from François Truffaut to Claude Sautet — set out to completely revise the traditional genre, transforming it for a younger audience. From modern French crime thrillers reinventing themselves in the 1960s to transforming into a global brand in 1990s, filmmaking in France has successfully held its own, despite the ever-increasing pressure of television competition.Click on the slideshow for a sneak peek of the retrospective.
