Pink Floyd is getting its first major international retrospective in London as rock shows multiply. The Victoria and Albert Museum show today announced “The Pink Floyd Exhibition: Their Mortal Remains” to mark 50 years since the band released its first single “Arnold Layne.”The exhibition follows other rock shows at the V&A, such as its “David Bowie Is” blockbuster, and display of the cultural and fashion influence of Motown. It comes in a year of multiple shows in the British capital examining the 40th anniversary of the growth of punk rock in the city, and other shows examining bands celebrating anniversaries such as the Rolling Stones “Exhibitionism” at the Saatchi Gallery.Like the Bowie and Rolling Stones events, “Their Mortal Remains” is promised to be an immersive, multi-sensory and theatrical journey. The sonic experience will be by Sennheiser. The band has sold more than 200 million records and promises a box set later in the year of its early recordings. The show will run from the underground psychedelic scene in 1960s London to the present day and is promoted by Michael Cohl and Iconic Entertainment Studios.Pink Floyd has produced some of the most famous imagery in popular culture: from pigs flying over Battersea Power Station on the “Animals” album and “The Dark Side of the Moon” prism to all the inventiveness of “The Wall” with marching hammers and inflatable teachers. Their art was aided and abetted by album designer Storm Thorgerson, illustrator Gerald Scarfe and more.Among other upcoming V&A shows, starting in September, is another devoted to music: “You Say You Want a Revolution? Records and Rebels 1966-1970.”The Pink Floyd Exhibition: Their Mortal Remains opens on May 13 2017 for 20 weeks. Tickets are available now.
