Albums by the late David Bowie and Radiohead are among nominations for Britain’s prestigious Mercy Prize. Bowie’s Blackstar album is his third nomination for the prize, and it is Radiohead’s fifth nomination, though neither has won previously. The Mercury Prize, now known as the Hyundai Mercury Prize, is for the year's best British or Irish album and pits different genres against one another, from folk and jazz to hard rock. Its prize money of £25,000 is secondary to the boost from sales. Previous victors such as the Arctic Monkeys can have another 100,000 sales in the month after the ceremony, this year on September 15. In addition, the 12-strong shortlist can in total sell an extra 400,000 copies. The Mercury focuses on musical quality and doesn't take into account media profile or live performances, according to a statement. Popular acts such as Adele have often lost out to cutting-edge performers such as PJ Harvey. The prize was established by the British Phonographic Industry in 1992 and the first award went to “Screamadelica”' by Primal Scream.ShortlistAnohni –HopelessnessBat For Lashes – The BrideDavid Bowie – BlackstarJamie Woon – Making TimeKano – Made In The ManorLaura Mvula – The Dreaming RoomMichael Kiwanuka – Love and HateRadiohead – A Moon Shaped PoolSavages – Adore LifeSkepta – KonnichiwaThe 1975 – I Like It When You Sleep, for You Are So Beautiful Yet So Unaware of ItThe Comet Is Coming – Channel The Spirits
