Paul Smith coined the term “classics with a twist” for the fashion style of his most British of brands, and much the same could be said of the music form of Punk, which turned rock music on its head from the mid-70s with its DIY approach.Photographer Derek Ridgers captured the spirit of the time, becoming one of the most renowned artists of the era by capturing not just the famous icons of the movement, but the people who made up the subculture.Timed to coincide with the start of the London Collections Men, Paul Smith hosted an exhibition of Derek Ridgers images to mark the 40th anniversary of punk at No. 9 Albemarle Street in Mayfair. Ridgers has also launched a new book of his work, titled Punk London 1977.Guests at the event included Dylan Jones, Editor-in-Chief of GQ Magazine, Caroline Rush and Sarah Mower of the British Fashion Council and Suzy Menkes of Vogue.Smith and Ridgers have also created limited edition t-shirts, priced at £80, of Derek’s original punk subjects. The t-shirts are on sale only at Paul Smith No. 9 Albemarle Street, or online.Click Slideshow for images of the event.
