Armenian cellist Narek Hakhnazaryan, winner of the Tchaikovsky Competition Gold Medal, has announced his debut performance in Hong Kong for May, set to take place at Concert Hall of Hong Kong City Hall.Praised by The New York Times as having “projected intensity from the moment he took the stage. To the very end, his intense focus and expressive artistry never flagged,” Hakhnazaryan has won plaudits ever since he won First Prize in the 2008 Young Concert Artists International Auditions in New York, after which he made his debut at Carnegie’s Zankel Hall.Having joined the BBC New Generation Artist Scheme 2014–2016 he has become a regular on the U.K.’s BBC Radio 3, and the “seasoned phenomenon” will perform for his first ever audience in Hong Kong on Tuesday 10 May, where he will play an all-French programme in honor of Le French May.His recital programme is set to include works by Fauré, Debussy, Massenet, Saint-Saëns and Frack, opened with Faure’s “Élégie, Op.24” and finishing with Franck’s “Sonata in A major.”Hakhnazaryan was born in Yerevan, Armenia, to a violinist mother and pianist father. He was mentored by Rostropovich, and studied at the New England Conservatory of Music in 2011.The prolific cellist has already played with the Mariinsky Orchestra, Seoul Philharmonic, Filarmonica de la Scala and the London Philharmonic, but “what really distinguishes his playing is its effect on the listener. There is an immediate connection between his cello playing and those lucky enough to be in the audience. It’s that personal connection, that passion and musical charisma, that not only wins competitions, but people’s hearts as well,” says Susan Miron of the Boston Musical Intelligencer. For more information: http://www.pphk.org/
