As part of a three week North American tour, the Hong Kong Ballet will perform in Canada and in New York City for the first time at The Joyce Theater from March 15-20.The troupe of 44 dancers led by Artistic Director Madeleine Onne focuses on classical ballet, but also presents original contemporary works. Onne’s objective for this tour, she says, is to “reflect the uniqueness of Hong Kong Ballet, [which] marries Asian sensuality with the western art form.”The mixed bill program showcases four of the company’s signature pieces:Dancing with the Wind“Dancing with the Wind” is the third piece that Li Jun has choreographed for Hong Kong Ballet. This experimental piece includes key elements of traditional Chinese dance and tai chi. It will feature an ink art set design, traditional Chinese costumes, and string and woodwind music from composer Ah Yan.A Room of Her Own“A Room of Her Own,” choreographed by Fei Bo, explores the unbridgeable gap between genders as expressed by the principal character Lu Xi, who feels suffocated by her floundering relationship with her husband, but becomes jealous and fearful when he strikes up a new friendship.CastratiNine of Hong Kong Ballet’s powerful male dancers take over the stage in Nacho Duato’s “Castrati,” set to a blend of grand classical music from Vivaldi and Karl Jenkins. The ballet explores the meaning of masculinity and the significance of male sacrifice in today’s world. In Light and ShadowInspired by a range of Baroque painters, including Michelangelo, Vermeer and Rembrandt, “In Light and Shadow” explores the interplay of light and shadow by juxtaposing contemporary lines with J. S. Bach’s lyrical music. The choreographer is by Krzysztof Pastor, Artistic Director of the Polish National Ballet.
