Singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran has won the Grammy for Song of the Year at the 58th annual awards ceremony in Los Angeles, for “Thinking Out Loud,” first released back in September 2014 for his second album “x.” The song was a U.K. number 1 in November 2014 and peaked at 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the U.S. where it stayed for 8 weeks in early 2015.“Thinking Out Loud” beat other nominees “Blank Space” (Taylor Swift), “Alright” (Kendrick Lamar), “Girl Crush” (Little Big Town) and “See You Again” (Wiz Khalifa) to take the award. It is the fifth time in the last nine years that U.K. acts have won the top prize at the Grammy Awards. The late Amy Winehouse took the prize in 2008 for “Rehab,” followed by “Viva la Vida” by Coldplay a year later. Adele won in 2012 for “Rolling in the Deep,” while Sam Smith took the award last year for “Stay with Me.”Amy Wadge, who co-wrote the song with Ed Sheeran, told Wales’ The Western Mail that the song was inspired by the fact that her mother-in-law was dying and Sheeran’s granddad had just passed away. “We had conversations about everlasting love. A lot of stuff comes out of conversations. His album was finished and I was just going to his house to have some chilling-out time with my mate. But when Ed went for a shower, I picked up a guitar which Harry Styles had bought him and I played two lines. Ed came running downstairs and said, ‘What’s that? We have to do something with that.’Other winners at the ceremony include:New Artist- Meghan TrainorRap Album - “To Pimp a Butterfly,” Kendrick LamarMusical Theater Album - “Hamilton”Country Album - “Traveller,” Chris StapletonRock Performance - “Don’t Wanna Fight,” Alabama ShakesPop Duo/Group Performance - “Uptown Funk,” Mark Ronson, featuring Bruno MarsTraditional Pop Vocal Album - “The Silver Lining: The Songs of Jerome Kern,” Tony Bennett & Bill CharlapPop Vocal Album - “1989,” Taylor SwiftDance Recording - “Where Are Ü Now,” Skrillex and Diplo With Justin BieberDance/Electronic Album - “Skrillex and Diplo Present Jack Ü,” Skrillex and DiploRock Song - “Don’t Wanna Fight,” Alabama Shakes (Alabama Shakes)Rock Album - “Drones,” MuseAlternative Music Album - “Sound & Color,” Alabama ShakesR&B Performance - “Earned It (Fifty Shades of Grey),” the WeekndR&B Song - “Really Love,” D’Angelo & Kendra Foster (D’Angelo and The Vanguard)Urban Contemporary Album - “Beauty Behind the Madness,” The WeekndR&B Album - “Black Messiah,” D’Angelo and the VanguardRap Performance - “Alright,” Kendrick Lamar
