EDM may seem like a young man’s game, but this year at Sonar, one of the genres’ all-time greats and is set to headline and provide what may be one of the visual spectacles of the summer.Jean-Michel Jarre once performed his brand of visionary live shows to a Guinness-World Breaking audience of 3.5 million in Moscow, and over four decades has become as known for his pioneering light shows as much as his dreamy and melodic electro music.Considered a leader of EDM long before the acronym existed, Jarre debuted back in 1976 with the low budget “Oxygene.” Now 67, he will lead Sonar’s line-up alongside New Order, James Blake, Flume, Four Tet and Laurent Garnier. Jarre’s performance will actually be a worldwide premiere of a new live show for Jarre who chose the festival for his stage return. He has promised to include tracks from his back catalog, as well as from two new records he has produced alongside some of the leading EDM artists of today, Air, M83, Fuck Buttons and Boys Noize. The new tracks feature on two new albums from Jarre, his first since 2007, “Electronica Part One: The Time Machine” and a forthcoming “Electronica Part Two” that will feature Jeff Mills and Julia Holter amongst others.“For me, Sónar has become everything a modern festival should aspire to be. From their faultless production on-site to the urban location they utilise so effectively, they've been able to establish a reputation on the continent and beyond for hosting some of the most exceptional musical acts and shows from all genres. This is why I chose them to mark my return to the stage and I'm very much looking forward to bringing my new show to the people of Sónar,” said Jarre in a statement announcing his appearance.Sonar 2016 takes place June 16-18 in Barceleona.
