Review: Cinderella, A Fairly True Story

Don’t be fooled by her diminutive size - almost everyone on stage towers over her  but when it comes to belting out her songs, Charlotte Campion’s voice soars high and crystal clear, making her performance as the title character one of the most enjoyable highlights of Cinderella, A Fairly True Story, the new musical now playing at Resort World Theater, Sentosa (until Jan 4).The singing is generally top notch throughout, with Sara de Smedt channeling a Cruella de Vil like stepmother (complete with faux-fur collar and dual color hair style) and Saartje Van Houtte and Dorten Schrijnemakers fully committing with comic gusto to the horrible antics of the stepsisters and Caleb Vines playing the proverbial charming prince, albeit as a somewhat spoiled brat indulged by his nanny. The performance is let down by a script that tries to be innovative, but whether an adult or a child, no one needed the narration which slowed the flow. although the newspaper-style curtain almost compensated. There are plenty of enjoyable and light-hearted moments to put fairy dust in the eyes of little ones while parents will be happy to hum to some of the junk-box songs like The Black Eyed Peas’ I Gotta Feeling and Bryan Adams’s Everything I do, I do it for You.Thanks to some good comic acting and great singing, this musical offers an enjoyable evening out for the family this festive season.
