The Rem Koolhaas-designed Fondazione Prada compound will meet its creative match in its debut performing arts project “Atlante del gesto” (Atlas of gesture).Choreographed by Virgilio Sieni, a leading figure in the Italian contemporary dance scene, the performance is a series of choreographic actions including Origine (Origin), Rituale (Ritual), Annuncio (Announcement), Gravità (Gravity), and Nudità (Nudity).Taking place across two levels of the Fondazione’s Podium building, the performance will share artistic links with the “Serial Classic” exhibition that opened the Milan space in May. “Serial Classic” also took place in a Koolhaas-designed space that allowed new depths of interactions with the statues on display. For Sieni, the “Serial Classic” project represents “a source for knowledge transmission and a tool for constructing the human through gesture” — a major source of inspiration for his own production. In “Atlante del gesto” professional and non-professional dancers of all ages, some related, will attempt to break down traditional boundaries of performance in order to create new comprehension of the craft.Stated Sieni, “These are actions that generate new resonances between the plates in the Atlas, in which the study of the fragment and body details develop an archaeological investigation facing the present.”Public participation is encouraged with guest performers welcomed in the Annuncio portion of the program. The performance will be as much a choreographic project as educational program, with research sessions in tandem with the performance. “Atlante del gesto” is on from September 18-October 3 at Fondazione Prada.
