It’s a tough job for people attending the world’s largest arts festival, which is starting in Edinburgh, to choose from the plethora of 50,000 performances and 5,000 shows scattered over 300 venues. We try to make it a little easier here with a first and preliminary list of some must-see shows — based on sneak previews, insider knowledge and reviewer feedback. As the Edinburgh Fringe and Edinburgh Festival continue, it will become clearer which shows are justified in getting the initial hype, hope and expectation. The following may not be the best when the awards are announced, but during the three-week festival (August 3 through August 27) they will be among the most anticipated. As the events continue, more favorites will emerge, so this list is likely to grow. 1. “NewsRevue”You have probably have heard of this perennial favorite, with a different script every year and often changing from week to week. This Guinness World Record-breaking, Fringe First-winning, Perrier finalist is, as the name says, a news-based song and sketch show. Politics will be satirized mercilessly with plenty on Brexit and Trump. Think of “Have I Got News For You” “and “Spitting Image” done sharper.Underbelly George Square (Udderbelly) from Thursday August 2 at 5:45 p.m. (not 15th). Comedy.IF YOU LIKE THIS, try the “Godmother of Scottish comedy” Janey Godley (famous for her Donald Trump protests). Her 20 years of shows usually come with an inventive name. “Godley’s Cream” follows “For Godley’s Sake!”At Laughing Horse @ The Counting House, 38 West Nicolson Street, EH8 9DD. The show marks the 100th year anniversary of the end of World War I. Andy Daniel returns to the role in Scamp Theatre’s production. The work seeks to honor those shot at dawn for cowardice or desertion, and eventually give posthumous pardons. At Underbelly Bristo Square (Cow Barn) at 2:40 p.m. (not 13th). Theatre. 3. “Revenants”This new play is by Olivier Award winner Nichola McAuliffe (“Maurice’s Jubilee,” “A British Subject,” “National Hero”). It is set 25 years after the execution of the Romanov family and 25 years before the murder of Martin Luther King. We confront the ghosts of the past, prejudice and revolution.Pleasance Dome (King Dome) at 5:00 p.m. (not 8th and 15th). Theater. 4. “Shift” The Fringe always has spectacular circus. One of the hottest acts is the Barely Methodical troupe, back in Edinburgh after the shows “Bromance” and “Kin.” The experimental circus blends show-stopping acrobatics with contemporary dance and tricks.Underbelly Circus Hub (The Beauty) from August 4 through August 25 at 4 p.m. (not 8th, 13th, 20th). Circus.IF YOU LIKE THIS, try Cirque Berserk!, Circus-Cision or Circolombia among many circus shows, many at the Circus Hub. 5. “It’s True, It’s True, It’s True”The Breach Theatre gets experimental again with a reenactment of a 1612 rape trial. Agostino Tassi was accused of the rape of outstanding painter Artemisia Gentileschi, who deserved to be better known for her art than her participation in the trial. At Underbelly Cowgate , Old Town, August 2 through 26.
